Debut performance at the Esplanade

July 2, 2024 – Debut performance at the Esplanade, invited by the Composers Society of Singapore, performing a piano solo of a renowned Chinese folk song arranged by a Singaporean composer.
The Singaporean composer’s arrangement of the Chinese folk song Lan Huahua demonstrates a sensitive balance between tradition and innovation. While the well-known lyrical melody is preserved, the piano adaptation enriches it with expanded harmonies, shifting tonal centers, and layered textures.
Rhythmic variations and ornamental passages add contrast, while pedaling and arpeggiated patterns evoke the timbres of traditional Chinese instruments such as the guzheng and pipa. At the same time, the use of Western classical idioms—particularly in the harmonic progressions and structural design—reflects Singapore’s multicultural musical environment.
The result is a piece that transcends its folk origins: intimate yet expressive, familiar yet newly imagined. In this way, Lan Huahua becomes not only a cultural bridge between China and Singapore but also a modern concert work that showcases the piano’s capacity to reinterpret folk heritage with contemporary artistry.
