A Day as a Volunteer Bookseller During Singapore’s National Reading Month

My day as a volunteer bookseller began with learning how to arrange the books on our display table. At first, I focused on showing off the prettiest covers. But soon, I noticed that readers tended to buy books by series rather than by individual titles. So I changed my strategy.

I familiarized myself with all 17 series we were selling and displayed representative titles from each one. Whenever a reader picked up a book, I could recommend other titles from the same series, helping them discover more books and encouraging additional purchases.

I also started counting the copies of each title we had and stacking identical books together, using the stacks as miniature bookshelves. This gave our display table more height and dimension, making the books much more visible and attractive.

I soon realized that different readers had different buying habits. Parents were often happy to let their children choose for themselves, while children tended to fall in love with one particular book and refuse to let it go. I learned to patiently introduce the little ones to the stories inside. More often than not, these encounters led to a sale.

We brought nearly 400 books to the event. As the book fair approached its end, we still had some stock left, but I remained enthusiastic, ready to welcome every potential buyer who might come our way.

And then, finally, my moment arrived: a reader came along ready to stock up on books! He picked out the titles he wanted, and when I counted the books while packing his purchases, I realized he had taken almost all the titles we had selected for the sale.

What a satisfying feeling!

Throughout the day, I learned to read people's expressions and listen to the way they spoke, adjusting my sales approach and pricing strategy as I went along.

One day as a volunteer bookseller turned out to be a wonderful lesson in observation, adaptability, and the art of selling.

And the best part? Every single book was sold!

What a happy and rewarding day.
